Day 62

My day started out wonderfully. I got up early so I could get down to the area where I can pick up a free WiFi signal thought I could possibly FaceTime with the girls. By the time I did, they were sound asleep. I did, though, wake up Dorothy and got to talk with her, face to face, for awhile. With nearly no one using the network, it was smooth as could be. No choppiness...no hesitation...just clear as could be. Just like that Apple commercial where the military guy is FaceTiming with this wife...yea...just exactly like that. I can't think of a better way to kick off the day....and about today....

The busiest day and most work accomplished in one day in my entire deployment...hands down. For several days, my connectivity has been severed in the office and I was unable to handle requisitions from the units and contractors here at WDW. The system came back up but at the same time, my counterparts back in the states awarded about 23 different contracts and pushed back to me to get funded and shipping info set so those assets can be pushed into the war zone to the end customers. It was a packed 12 hours and by the end, I felt welded to my desk. At one point, I had my headphones plugged in and some 80s hair band music blaring. Trouble is that everyone likes to interrupt everyone when they're working and I got tired of pulling my ear buds out every 1/2 song. Speaking of music, I had to drive to the opposite side of the air base this morning to pick up a new arrival who got in late last night..a civilian intern from Columbus, OH. Wow...what a place to be an intern!!! That's one way to secure a job, eh?! Anyway, there was some Queen in the CD player and since I was alone for a bit, I cranked it up. You know what? It's a little thing like that made me miss home and driving my car.  It's weird, I know...but that was awesome to crank up the tunes...loud. I also picked up a young 19 or so year old Army soldier who needed a ride. That's common here...a lot of military folks will pick up others...regardless of which service and give them a ride. It's about 5-10 minutes to say hi, find out where they hail from, what their job is, and wish them a good and safe day here in Oz. Yesterday, a civilian guy gave us a ride. He worked 3 jobs back in the States and over here, he works with the local national truck drivers. He travels the roads...outside the "wire" with no protection...no armored vehicle...no weapon. He has grown a beard out pretty far and carries scarves, etc. so he can blend in when he needs to...or try to. I would never want to do his job...I don't even want to leave the base WITH armor and a weapon.

In yesterday's post, I talked about the fallen. Just in case you never looked at the link I provided or you haven't looked today. Yesterday...June 9th....one day...7 names. 6 Army soldiers and 1 U.S. Marine.  7 families...7 caskets...7 funerals...may they never be forgotten.

Tonight, the winds were ferocious.  Bad enough to shake the walls of my CHU. So, I stayed in and didn't run and just watched TV...Evan Almighty was on. Not much else, really. I did salivate a bit more over Apple's releases coming up soon. While this is my deployment blog, I am willing to bet that the majority of you have either an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch...combination thereof, or all 3. Well if you do, then listen up. A new update is coming out called iOS 5. Most updates are just so-so and no big deal. Not this one...this is going to make your/our device feel like a whole new phone, etc. My favorites? How about iMessaging...or the camera button accessible on the lock screen...or the volume buttons doubling as photo taking buttons...or the ability to edit and crop photos...or the iMessaging system being accessible from the lock screen and integrating all the forms of communication...texts, e-mails, Tweets, etc. Lots of great things and just like Apple, they made an introductory video to make us salivate just a bit more:
So when is it coming out? All they are saying is this Fall. Want to be notified? Sign up here. You know I have!!!

Goodnight, everyone.
